Is your site legal?
There are a number of legal issues in connection with websites and
email, such as:
- A site should be 'accessible'.
It is even possible to be sued for having an inaccessible site - a
fact that few people are aware of.
- If you collect personal details via a form
or sign-up box, even something as simple as names and e-mail
addresses, you need to register as a Data Controller under the Data
Protection Act 1998.
- You need permission to send direct email to
an individual. A named person within a company counts as an
individual for this purpose.
- A limited company must have its registered
address and company number on not just its website but all emails
and company stationery.
- Copyright laws must be obeyed. You
cannot simply copy a website that you like the look of, use photos
that you happen to come across or 'borrow' wording from elsewhere on
the net. The same applies to printed publications.
